This Arctic Tern, landing near a tundra pond in Denali National
Park, can spend the winter as far away as the cold seas off Antarctic.
The annual journey can be in excess of 20,000 miles. Since terns
spend summers in both the North and South Hemispheres, this species
probably sees more daylight in their lifetimes than any other
animal.
On the tundra, even a stunted 6 foot tall Black Spruce can serve
as a perch for a bird to survey its surroundings. |
