A Grizzly (Brown Bear) searches the waters of Brooks River for
the last salmon meal of the evening. Katmai National Park.
Once thought a species distinct from the grizzly bear (even though
cross-breeding had been observed), brown bears are now considered
as grizzlies living along the coastline. But the abundance of
protein-rich salmon for countless generations has transformed
them into giants (as compared to their berry-eating kindred).
(OK, I'll 'fess up: I was a bear researcher in Katmai during the
late '70s) |
