A young bull moose pauses while eating pond weeds. Late August,
Denali National Park.
Probably only 3 years old, this bull was the king of this pond,
mainly because he was the only moose! Several years from now he
will have the size and experience to challenge the mature bulls
for the right to mate. The skin-like strands hanging from his
antlers are the remnents of velvet (a furry covering that has
nourished the antler all summer), which is rubbed off each fall.
Later in the fall, the antlers will fall off. |
